My own forest of Log Cabins

I have never cared for assembling the blocks into a quilt top. I do love making blocks though. As a result I have oodles of blocks needing to be assembled.

I have been using Bonnie Hunter's Leaders & Enders technique when sewing blocks. It works. So I tried it for assembling quilt tops. MAN OH MAN! Am I ever pleased! My pile of 3" Bowtie blocks is growing and I have three log cabin flimsies to show for a few days' of work!

I posted about the blue/white Log Cabin already. I made it into a spiral.

I love the diagonal look of this quilt top. Nice and clean and neat. These blocks are 10" finished.

And here is a zig zag setting. These blocks are 12" finished. I cannot tell you which setting I like better. The only decision I need to make now is to decide which GD gets which quilt. There are three birthdays of GD for the month of March.

I used EQ7 to design the settings for the Log Cabin blocks. It is a great and powerful quilt designing program. How many of you have EQ?

My newest Quiltmaker came today. And as always Our Bonnie Hunter has another great block that uses our bonus triangles of course! And here is my basket (that is overflowing) of new 3" Bowtie blocks made from a 5" charm collection of Gatherings by Moda. (old fabric)
Even though we live withing the city limits we get all kinds of wildlife visiting our home. I totally understand the food chain. And do not begrudge the hawk's dinner of my sparrows. The picture above is one of the younger hawks that visit my feeders. Since it is on the ground and looking right back at me you can see the hunt was not successful.

I LOVE SNOW!

Hi Subee - I enjoyed seeing the photo of your hawk. I also understand the foodchain but would be sad to see "my" birds being taken away. Strangely enough I haven't gotten any birds yet this winter. I normally get more in the summer anyway so maybe our freeze/thaw pattern is helping them find good elsewhere.

Is that snow picture from today? Over 50 degrees here (NE Nebr.) Love both your Log Cabin tops. You must have collected a LOT of black & white fabrics.

Lovely log cabins! I hear the hawks flying overhead but I think we have just enough trees that cannot dive at my feeders. I especially stopped to say, "I love snow, too!"

I think I would have a hard time keeping track on a log cabin block to do it as a leader and ender project. But you seem to have managed well doing it. I love log cabin quilts.

All of your log cabin settings are beautiful, but that diagonal line setting wins my vote out of these three!
I don't EQ--I'm on a MAC and understand it is only for Windows.
I love snow, too, if I'm not driving anywhere in a storm! I had a bad experience on an icy road once. Totaled the car--I was lucky to only have minor injuries!

I love how organised you are - and you create really lovely quilts. I like both log cabins, but I think the first pic is my fave...

Love those log cabins. I have EQ6 and use it mostly for working out layouts, playing with colours and changing the size of quilts from books :)

BEAUTIFUL log cabins - what lucky GDs!! As far as the directions go, am I following this correctly? Instead of adding individual logs, the partial blocks are placed along the length of a strip, sewn, and then cut apart? I've been wanting to do some of these and have lots of 1.5" strips. The only log cabin I've done was many years ago when I first started quilting, and I used a set of plastic templates for cutting. I love the strip piecing idea. Thanks!

I got EQ 4 at a bargain (from someone who had it and then was given another). I've bought every upgrade so I don't miss anything....that said, I have NOT gotten my money's worth out of it. It's my fault because I don't practice. I know that with experimentation (just plain fiddling around) I'd get more proficient. At the rate I'm going that might be EQ10!

Some beautiful quilt and winter/wildlife scenery all in one post! Well done, Sue! I LOVE EQ!!
